The role and its purpose

Working within the wider Back Office support teams you will be responsible for supporting the IP network infrastructure serving the customer mobile network. You will provide operational control and maintenance of IP equipment supporting key end customer services including, Mobile Broadband, Billing, Provisioning, CRM, Retail, Content Delivery, Mobile Packet Core, Contact Centre and Production /Corporate data networks.

You will be part of a team that integrates new services and infrastructure to support the evolution of mobile network services in a highly adaptable and cost effective manner. You will be maintaining high levels of service continuity on IP devices for both internal and external customers, with a strong focus on end-to-end service.

Our Business Operations function is responsible for ensuring the effective end to end support across IT Infrastructure, IT Applications, Business Intelligence, Core and Radio Network domains.

We are looking for the right person to join our IP Support team to ensure that we consistently maintain a high quality of service availability for our customers.
Reporting directly to the IP Support Team Leader, the individual will be required to play an important role in providing technical support as well as contributing to the operational development activities of the team as a whole.

What does the role involve

  • Providing 3rd level technical support for IP equipment in a multi-vendor environment.
  • Providing out-of-hours on-call support cover as part of the 24x7 on-call rota.
  • Troubleshooting logged faults in order to accurately isolate the cause, taking corrective action to minimize the impact of faults when they occur.
  • Liaising with vendors where necessary in order to resolve vendor related issues and monitor progress through to resolution.
  • Supporting the implementation of new equipment, and the ongoing maintenance, and configuration of existing systems.
  • Supporting project deliveries from engineering, review design documentation, implement solutions, and subsequently deploy configuration.
  • Developing, documenting and refining best practice and standard operating procedures/processes to improve the management of IP infrastructure.
  • Building good working relationships with staff from all areas of the business to consistently achieve the best results.
  • Reviewing and approving network change requests.

The type of person we are looking for

Must Have:

  • A good understanding of IP Networks, 7 layer model, and TCP/IP technologies such as DNS, SNMP, telnet, HTTP, HTTPs, and ICMP.
  • A good understanding of routing protocols, including OSPF,IS-IS, BGP.
  • A good understanding of data-carrying techniques such as MPLS.
  • A good understanding of high availability switching and routing environments including HSRP.
  • Ability to provide in-depth analysis of network traffic using traffic analysis tools such as Wireshark.
  • An Organised approach to fault finding and ability to take responsibility.
  • Exposure to ITIL and a change management process to deliver network service changes through either internal or external implementation teams.
  • A positive attitude and personally motivated to continually learn new, emerging technologies and solution which can be applied to the UK network.

Desirable:

  • Hands-on experience with Juniper JUNOS and platforms such as MX960, M320, EX9214, E4500, EX4200.
  • Hands-on experience with Huawei NE40 platforms.
  • Hands on experience with Cisco ACE and CSM load balancer products.
  • Technical competencies Hands-on experience with Cisco IOS and platforms including Nexus, 7600, 6500, 3750.
  • Technical qualification or practical experience to a CCNP/CCIP level.
  • Relevant work experience, including UNIX systems administration with scripting skills in Python, Shell, PHP or Perl.
  • A good understanding of operational support systems used in fault and performance management.
