Legal Counsel - Commercial Property - Mobile Telecoms - Permanent - Berkshire

Overview: Oversight and management of all the external lawyers as well as providing strategic direction and interfacing with the legal team regularly. This person will run a portfolio of circa 800 active sites and the work is mix of contentious (25%) and non-contentious (75%) and the majority is outsourced. This person will also be part of the wider Leadership team.

Responsibilities:

Lead for the Legal Property team on the management of the Unilateral estate as managed by the company, covering non contentious transactional aspects and property litigation through the County Court and the Land Tribunal, for all aspects of renewals, modifications and acquisitions in relation to the portfolio of sites.

Lead for all legal queries in respect of the Unilateral estate, providing pragmatic, prudent and consistent legal advice (being the Subject Matter Expert on property projects impacting the Unilateral estate).

Oversight and management of external law firms to deliver on time within budget and to the requisite standards.

Working with Property Delivery Managers to ensure reporting of all legal matters for the Unilateral Estate is clear, concise and up to date at all times.

Responsible for embedding change - engaging cross-functionally with the Property Department, shareholders and suppliers to inspire and implement process change and delivery.

Operate in a collaborative, constructive and solution orientated at all times with a positive "can do" approach to challenging scenarios. Walking towards and embracing challenges to tackle them head on and in a timely way.

Challenge the status quo, keep abreast of the external market and use this to drive improvements, continuous improvements and learning.

Challenge, coach and support managers and leaders to demonstrate the Company's Way, ensuring that feedback becomes a regular occurrence. Develop our staff to shine. Be a role model for the Company's way.

Mentor and coach for other Legal Property team members, irrespective of whether they are direct reports.

Continuous improvement - Introduce innovation into the process that can impact results, enhance delivery and assist the organisation to meet its business objectives and goals. Be pragmatic in the approach taken to streamline processes, be concise and clear and to reduce duplication or wasted effort.

Cross functional working - Support internal and external stakeholders in all aspects of the role.

Challenge the status quo - Be a challenging force for any poor behaviours or outputs from your team or external suppliers and encourage or foster consistent, quality delivery.

Essential skills:

PQE experience in property law, property litigation, landlord and tenant issues and or in the telecommunications sector; and

Membership of the Law Society of England and Wales or the Bar Council.

Extensive knowledge of property law including Landlord and Tenant Act 1954;

Extensive property litigation experience

Ability to manage a high caseload, to prioritise and delegate where required

In-house experience particularly valuable in terms of being commercial, pragmatic and able to drive delivery of external parties

Experience of business change as a result of new legislation

Telco experience

Ability to contribute at scale to leadership team strategic thinking and planning

Ability to navigate challenges to routes to renewal and legal issues with a solutions orientated and risk aware mindset

Ability to effect change and to approach matters in a pragmatic manner

Ability to manage a volume caseload with effective prioritisation

Ideally they would have worked within a transformation environment. The team is very collaborative so this person would need to be happy to get stuck in and work in a fluid and cross functional environment.

This person will need be strong with their property knowledge and have excellent stakeholder management skills.

ECC Code knowledge/Digital Economy Act and telecoms experience is highly desirable
