Job Title: Device Design Engineer

Work Location: UK/Suffolk/Ipswich


Job Context


Part of the design platform team, the jobholder will be responsible for supporting the design team in the modelling and simulation of advanced semiconductor chip designs for our future telecommunication networks.
We are currently developing a design platform based on integrating the best commercial software tools. The candidates will need to be able to contribute in the following area: mask design, structural modelling and detailed opto-electronic modelling. A good understanding of semiconductor laser physics and simulation methodology is essential. The candidate will work on projects at various stages of product development and will be required to provide critical inputs in line with the project timelines.

Main Responsibilities

  • Optoelectronic device design and modelling using commercial and own device models.
  • Application of models to III-V devices such as lasers, SOAs, photodetectors, electroabsorption modulators.
  • Work with internal customers to translate their specifications into workable designs.
  • Make suggestions for improvements to device design / experiments to investigate areas for potential improvement.
  • Carry out design work at physical and system level.
  • Manage assigned design tasks to deliver design to agreed specifications, cost and delivery times.
  • Provide design support to troubleshoot process issues.

Skills/Qualifications
Essential

  • BSc in relevant physical science plus 4 years' experience of design of active or passive devices.
  • Several years' experience of device modelling.
  • Use of commercial modelling software.
  • Experience of working directly with customers to turn requests into device specifications.
  • Ability to analyse characterisation

Desirable

  • PhD in relevant physical science.
  • Experience of commercial optical software packages such as RSoft, Fimmwave, Fimmprop, Crosslight and other finite element analysis tools.
