How to get started

Preparing your CV

You want to prepare your Personal Profile in the way that presents your skills in the clearest possible formats. We have set out the format that we have found to be most successful (appendix 1).

It is important to sell yourself in a concise and positive manner without exaggerating, (remember, you will be interviewed on the basis of your claimed skills). Be precise and
do justice to the experience and expertise that you have gained throughout your career to date. Keep the presentation simple and professional. A crisply word-processed document is ideal.

Setting up a Limited Company

Most contractors operate through their own Limited Company. This is the route we recommend for you to follow.

Your company will be primarily a vehicle for managing and maximising your earnings. It enables you to function in a way that produces the greatest allowances and keeps your disposable income high.

Project People's accountant will advise and assist you in setting up and operating as a limited company, ensuring that you meet all the statutory requirements and work within the tax laws to gain all the financial advantages possible.

What happens next?

Contact Project People, discuss your plans to start a career in contracting and send a copy of your Personal Profile.

We compare your skills with our clients’ requirements and contact you to discuss work that we believe will be suitable.

We will ask you to come and see us for an in-depth face to face interview so that we can establish personal contact and understand your skills, experience and contract requirements in detail.

We will certainly ask for at least two years’ references from IT professionals (not from your current employer, of course), and these will be taken up in writing before we put you forward for any client interview.

Once we are satisfied with your references, and we are confident that you have the skills and personal attributes to match the needs of the client, we will, with your permission, submit your CV to the client, who will decide whether or not to invite you for an interview.

You will have a face to face interview, or possibly two, with the client. Some clients might also ask you to sit a short aptitude or technical test as part of their interview process.

Remember that the purpose of the interview is to verify your Personal Profile and to confirm that your will fit well into the client’s team.

Once you have been offered a contract and accepted, you will enter into a written contract with Project People for a minimum period - usually 3 or 6 months at the agreed rate of payment.
